MANILA, Sept. 7, 2012—Sr. Mary Pilar Verzosa, RGS, the founder of Pro-Life Philippines, is in critical condition after suffering a ruptured aneurysm Thursday afternoon.
Versoza was giving a seminar at the De La Salle University – Dasmariñas in Cavite to medical and nursing students when she experienced dizziness, headaches and vomiting, after which she was taken to the university’s Medical Center.
She is currently comatose and breathing through an artificial respirator in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Verzosa requires the aid of a respirator due to massive bleeding in the brain, thereby considerably affecting the respiratory system.
The 67-year-old nun, to whom the beginning of the pro-life movement in the Philippines is attributed, turns 68 on Sept. 24, for which a big celebration will be held. Lorna Melegrito, Pro-Life Philippines executive director, said that a birthday blowout-cum-fundraising will take place on Sept. 29, 8 p.m., at Max’s Restaurant, Scout Tuason, Quezon City.
“Whatever God’s plan is for our dear Sr. Pilar, we will push through with honoring her life,” she said of the dynamic Verzosa, a member of the Religious of the Good Shepherd.
Melegrito also enjoined everyone to continue offering prayers for Verzosa, who has unceasingly devoted her life to preserving the culture of life in the country, largely by counseling women and families in crisis situations, putting into place programs and services to address the women’s needs, motivating family and life advocates all over the country to keep up efforts in defending life and family, in primarily paving the way for the growth of the pro-life movement in the Philippines since the mid-1970s.
