LONDON, United Kingdom, Feb. 26, 2013—Filipino-British singer Cherie Anderson and her band “Ooberfuse” were the ones who translated the World Youth Day (WYD) anthem to English and will perform it live in Brazil during the youth gathering on July.
According to news reports, vocalist Anderson, keyboardist Hal St. John, and guitarist Nico Cox translated together “Hope of the Dawn” from the original Portuguese composition “Esperanca do Amanhecer.”
In an article from GMA News Online, Anderson was quoted as saying that translating the WYD theme song was “daunting,” adding that the band members are not fluent in Portuguese.
“We are very happy, honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to sing the official WYD song in English,” Anderson said in an e-mail interview with GMA News Online.
Anderson, whose mom hails from Leyte, is not completely a neophyte when it comes to being part of the WYD. In fact, her composition “Faith in You” reportedly bested 270 other song entries vying for the official WYD song a few years back.
Anderson’s band “Ooberfuse” also sang the youth anthem for Pope Benedict’s visit to the UK in 2010 and performed during the WYD in Madrid, Spain in 2011.
Anderson and her bandmates formed “Ooberfuse” 2010 after meeting at a Church event. They started to play music together and reportedly joined “Live and Unsigned” competition, where “Ooberfuse” was named Most Original Band and One of the Best Unsigned Live Musical Acts in the UK. (YouthPinoy)
