Youth assembly employs ‘vocation accompaniment’

MANILA, Nov. 10, 2012—Recognizing young people’s need for a feeling of connectedness, a Salesian youth assembly was held Saturday  designed to accompany the youth on their “journey” towards their vocation.

“Kuwentuhan” on vocation

According to Fr. Favie Faldas, SDB, Commission on Youth Ministry delegate, “Hindi ba youth ministry is journeying? Another word is accompaniment, but this time you want to bring them to the fulfillment of God’s call which is vocation.”

The Salesian youth assembly held today in Don Bosco Canlubang, Calamba, Laguna, had a more intimate and personal setting that is more like “kuwentuhan” or an informal sharing of stories than a one-way giving of input.

“Gusto ng mga bata may makakausap at maging kaibigan sa kanilang paglalakbay, [The kids want someone to talk to and be friends with during their journey],” Faldas, who is also the chaplain of the Federation of National Youth Organizations, explained.

Intimate and personal setting

More than 300 youth from all over Luzon attended the assembly, which had two main activities, a play about vocations and a group dynamic with an informal sharing among  5 or more young people headed by a Salesian.

“Hindi maramihan ang banat. (The tactic is to have a small number.) They really want it to be intimate,” Faldas added.

After lunch, the groups switched activities so that everyone can share the experience.

The event was organized by the Salesian Commission on Youth, particularly the sector for vocation animation, in coordination with the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. [Niva’ana Ella Delacruz]
