MANILA, Dec. 12, 2012— A United Kingdom-based Catholic Church organization has committed to extend roughly P6.5 million to relief work for the victims of typhoon “Pablo” in the Philippines.
The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) said it will continue to actively support ongoing relief operations in Mindanao.
“We have pledged £100,000 to help our local partners provide housing and support to those who have lost their home,” it said.
CAFOD’s Senior Emergency Response Office Robert Cruickshank is flying out to Mindanao over Christmas to provide expert support.
The agency’s partner in the Philippines is EcoWeb, which has been working in the affected communities.
Earlier, Catholic aid agency Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand said it will donate NZD$5,000 or roughly P1.7 million for the Caritas Philippines’ relief operations.
The agency is working with its sister agencies like the CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action and the Catholic Relief Services on the ground that sent joint teams to the affected areas.
As of Dec. 11, the death toll from the strongest cyclone to hit the country this year went up to 714 and more than 800 remained missing.
The damage to agriculture brought by the typhoon has also climbed to P10.3 billion as of December 10, according to the Department Agriculture. (CBCPNews)
