MANILA, Jan. 11, 2015—A Catholic priest has raised the alarm on the problems affecting the country’s education system, two of which are the shortage of classrooms and the teachers who will man them, calling on the government to come out with concrete plans which will improve the quality of education of the Filipino youth.
“The lack of classrooms as well as of teachers are serious problems crying for urgent solution … The government has to tackle this reality head-on, and take steps towards solving it,” Fr. Conegundo Garganta told Church-run Radyo Veritas in a recent interview.
The priest, who is the executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY), stressed that these problems deprive the Filipino youth of their right to quality education which is supposed to form them into good citizens of the country.
According to the House Committee on Higher Education and Technical Education, state colleges and universities nationwide need an additional 17,057 people for their teaching force. (Raymond A. Sebastián/CBCP News)
