MALOLOS City, April 10, 2016 – The Malolos Diocesan Commission on Social Action (CSA) with its Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) on April 9 spearheaded a candidates’ forum for local candidates running at the provincial level.

Held at the Immaculate Conception Parish – Cathedral and Minor Basilica from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., KAdalisayang PAglilingkod sa YApak ng PAnginoon at Ating mga Ninuno” (KAPAYAPAAN) is a candidates’ forum inspired by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in the Philippines (CBCP)’s call for “One Good Vote” (OGV), which involves knowing candidates’platforms to facilitate proper discernment.

Bulacan’s issues

According to Fr. Efren G. Basco, Chairman of the Diocesan Commission on Social Action, fora for political candidates are a means in order for the Church to help voters, regardless of their faith, make informed choices during elections.

The priest said the CSA the said event is a venue for candidates to express their thoughts in important issues as well as an opportunity for them to pledge cooperation for peaceful elections in the province.

He also said such endeavors are in response to the social teachings of the Church.

Co-presented by the Provincial Office of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) as well as the Philippine National Police – Bulacan, the forum tackled three major concerns in the province:

  • Poverty
  • Environment, climate change, and global warming
  • Political reform

Peace covenant signing

Seven gubernatorial candidates, two vice gubernatorial candidates, three congressional candidates, and four provincial board member candidates, who attended the event, outlined their platforms and discussed how governance in the province can be improved.

Before ending the forum, the candidates were invited to sign a peace covenant in which they promised to uphold the law throughout the electoral process in pursuit of peaceful elections.

The Diocese of Malolos is composed of the province of Bulacan and the city of Valenzuela in Metro Manila.

Earlier, the CSA also conducted a candidates’ forum for Valenzuela City on April 1 at San Diego de Alcala Parish, Polo, Valenzuela City. (Kendrick Ivan B. Panganiban / CBCP News)
