MANILA, June 27, 2013—Run for peace and get fit in the process.

A lay community has organized an obstacle run to support the ongoing peace process in Mindanao.

Slated on June 29, the event is spearheaded by the community of Sant’Egidio in partnership with Radio Veritas and in cooperation with the Office of the Presidential on Peace Process (OPAPP).

According to the organizers, the event is their idea of helping promote peace and strengthen the friendship between Christians and Muslims.

It is also one of the means they can do to assist the government in establishing unity and peace, they added.

The event will begin with a Eucharistic celebration at 4 p.m. followed by a civil ceremony to be participated by various government agencies that include DOJ, OPAPP, AFP, Bureau of Fire Protection, Manila Police District, Philippine Coast Guard, Parole and Probation Administration and the City of Mandaluyong.

Students from Manila colleges and universities are expected to join the event on June 29 at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta.

Themed “Manila in a Pace for Peace: FIT for LIFE”, the proceeds of the run will benefit student scholars of Sant’ Egidio’s School of Peace and Rainbow Country from Banawe, Cainta and cities of Quezon, Marikina , Mandaluyong, Cavite, Batangas, Cebu and Zamboanga.

The community of Sant’Egidio is a public lay association within the Catholic Church whose members lived in solidarity with the poor and communicate the Gospel in a spirit of dialogue and ecumenism. Founded in Rome in 1968, the association now has around 50,000 members in more than 70 countries throughout the world. (CBCPNews)
