SAN PABLO CITY, May 15, 2011—Don Bosco Laguna Bishop Leo M. Drona suggested that those who say that the Catholic Church is “bankrupt of reasons†in its fight against the passage of the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill should reflect on the “Paradox of the Cross†by St. Paul (1Cor. 18-2:5).
Quoting St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, Drona said, “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
The prelate was reacting to the news in a national daily quoting Gabriela Partylist Congressman Luz Ilagan who charged that the Catholic Church is bankrupt
of arguments that is why it is resorting to threats, name-calling and emotional tantrums.
But Drona would not comment directly with the lawmaker’s comments instead he quotes “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside.â€
He added: “Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the
wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have
faith.â€
Drona continued to remind pro-RH promoters in government and private sectors saying: “God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are
something, so that no human being might boast before God.â€
Finally the prelate likened the Catholic Church’s stand against the RH Bill which could not convince hardline pro RH supporters with St. Paul’s words saying
“I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration
of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.†(Fr. Romy O. Ponte)
