MANILA, July 5, 2011—Individuals and groups are invited to submit their nominations for the 2011 Gawad Bayani ng Kalikasan (Environmental Heroes/Heroines Awards 2011) as the deadline is getting nearer. The last day of submission is until midnight (12:00 AM) of July 15.
Lisa Ito-Tapang, chief of the research, education and advocacy of the CEC in a statement said, unlike other environmental awards, GBK intends to recognize the efforts of small organizations, individuals and communities in preserving and defending the environment from plunder and abuse.
Ito-Tapang says, what is unique with the GBK is that it has a human rights component.
GBK is open to all Filipino citizens, organizations and institutions, who have demonstrated extraordinary ability and effort to protect the environment and people’s welfare, whether in form of advocacy, campaigns, education, research, technology development, community services, mass media or cultural work.
“We are giving seven awards, three for both individual and organization categories and one will receive the Most Distinguished Award,†Ito-Tapang said.
“The Most Distinguished Award is awarded to an individual or organization in recognition of his/her/their being an inspiration and example to the Filipino people for offering time and talents for the defense of the environment and advancement of the people’s welfare. The Individual Awards is given to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ability and effort to uphold the environment and people’s welfare, whether in the form of advocacy, campaigns, education, research, technology development, community services, mass media, or cultural work. And lastly, the Organizational Awards ? awarded to people’s and community organizations and institutions that have demonstrated unity in upholding the welfare of the people and of the environment by exemplary actions and advocacy, campaigns, education, research, technology development, community services, mass media, or cultural work,†Ito-Tapang further explained.
