Franciscans seek to revive ‘pasyon’ in Isabela

MANILA, March 25, 2013— Franciscan missionaries have come to rescue the “dying” Filipino custom of “Pasyon” during Holy Week in Isabela province.

Fr. Robert Reyes, who is a now a novice of the Franciscans, said they are particularly trying to revive the tradition in the historic Palanan town, located in the eastern coast of Isabela where they are assigned.

“It’s really a concern of the Franciscans here in Palanan to revive the important traditions like pasyon,” Reyes said.

The “pasyon” or “pabasa”, which usually begins on Holy Monday, is the chanting of the poetic prayer story of the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Christ.

The Holy Week practice continues day and night, for two straight days, or even until Good Friday in some areas.

“But here in Palanan, I don’t really hear pasyon activities because the elders doing it already passed away,” he said.

Reyes said the notable decline of pabasa activities in the area may be attributed to the failure of the elders to pass the tradition to the younger generation.

“It’s a tradition that should be passed to the next generation. That’s why pasyon is strong in Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, and in many parts of Metro Manila like Makati,” he said. (CBCPNews)
