MANILA, Jan. 11, 2013— Nationwide electoral gun ban will start on Sunday and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting is calling on the authorities to enforce the law ‘seriously’.
PPCRV chairperson Henrietta de Villa has claimed serious failings in the implementation of gun ban, as she criticized its management in the past.
“It’s sad because the gun ban is just a like a game… illegal and loose firearms are more rampant during elections,” de Villa told Manila archdiocese-run Radio Veritas Friday.
The PPCRV chief said the Commission on Elections and the police must have the “political will” to carry out the electoral gun ban effectively.
“They should make arrests and filed charges against those who are violating this to show that the government and the Comelec are serious in enforcing the law,” she added.
The poll body earlier reminded the public that the gun ban for the May 13 elections is set to begin on January 13 as the country enters the 120-day election period.
Under the policy, everyone is prohibited to carry firearms except institutions identified earlier by the Comelec such as the police and the military. (CBCPNews)
