MANILA, Oct. 3, 2011— The Catholic Church has urged the faithful to donate generously for flood relief work in northern provinces of Luzon, where thousands of people have been hit by the recent typhoon.
In Manila, yesterday’s collections at Masses included an appeal for Caritas Manila, which is helping victims particularly in flooded towns of Bulacan and Pampanga provinces.
Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Archbishop of Manila, said the money gathered will go to Caritas workers who are helping victims of two typhoons which hit the country in less than a week.
“(The help) would go to the victims of the typhoon and flooding in Bulacan, Pampanga, and other provinces that have been hit by the disaster,” Rosales said.
Meanwhile, Caritas Manila has opened its doors to donations for its ongoing relief operations which also include provinces in southern Luzon.
The Caritas team is currently at its main office in Pandacan, Manila and Radio Veritas station in Quezon City, collecting and repacking relief goods intended for the Filipinos devastated by the typhoon.
“We try to collect a lot of donation in Metro Manila in cash and in kind especially the food, clothing, and medicines,” said Fr. Anton Pascual, Caritas Manila executive director.
Among the suggested in-kind donations for the victims are rice, canned goods, potable water, noodles, bread and blankets.
Pascual said donations in kind can be made at parish churches in Manila, Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas. Cash assistance, he said, may be deposited at Caritas’ BDO savings account (5600-45905); BPI (30635357); and Metrobank (1753-175069543). [CBCPNews]
