MANILA, Sept. 17, 2012—A Catholic bishop based in Southern Philippines has called for respect for all religions saying that it is essential to peace.
Isabela Bishop Martin Jumoad said that while all people are entitled to freedom of expression, they should use it in a way that would not trigger conflict.
The bishop made the statement Monday amid the raging protests around the world over a film made in the US that mocks Islam.
“This is an invitation for all of us particularly the film makers that they have to respect religion,” Jumoad told Catholic Church-run Radyo Veritas on Monday.
“It’s really needed because when you destroy the reputation, honor and integrity of a particular religion, you do not respect the God that they worship and adore,” he said.
Jumoad also lauded the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for rejecting Al-Qaeda calls to attack US targets in the country.
Ghazali Jaafar, MILF vice chairman for Political Affairs, said they stand firm with its ceasefire agreement with the government.
Malacañang is also not blocking the film in the country despite the growing anti-US demonstrations in the Middle East and other parts of Africa.
The authorities, however, will remain on alert to neutralize threats to security particularly around the US Embassy in Manila. [RL/CBCPNews]
