MANILA, June 21, 2013— Saying that evangelization starts at home, a Catholic bishop said that parents must be equipped with enough knowledge on matters of faith.
Borongan Bishop Crispin Varquez said parents do not need a degree in theology or memorize the Bible in order to be effective evangelizers. But they do need to know their faith, he said.
“This is one of their moral obligations to their children,” Varquez said.
To help parents in fulfilling their obligation, the diocese is preparing the Handbook on Family Catechesis in Waray-waray translation, which will be made available to the families soon.
Varquez said parents should impart to their children the basic doctrines of Catholic faith such as the Ten Commandments, the Seven Sacraments, the Five Commandments of the Church, the reasons for the devotion to the saints especially to the Blessed Virgin Mary and others.
“Parents should also encourage their children to read the lives of the saints who are the models of our Christian life,” he said. (CBCPNews)
