Coyne awards prize in Manila photowalk

UCAN STAFF, March 9, 2011–A staff member of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News got a prize for the best photo picked by internationally acclaimed photo-journalist Michael Coyne in a “photowalk” seminar yesterday.

Roy Lagarde received a photographer’s bag for beating more than 20 participants of the seminar organized by the Union of Catholic Asian News (UCAN) to train its reporters and photographers in the Philippines.

Coyne, visiting the Philippines this week, conducted the basic workshop and photowalk in Manila on Monday.

Based in Bangkok, UCAN (with ucanews.com) publishes news and views relating to the Churches in Asia. It recently unveiled new branding and a more vibrant website enhanced by a rich photo gallery and variety of multi-media productions.

The workshop was hosted by the Titus Brandsma Media Center of the Order of Carmelites in Quezon City. The participants went around Manila to shoot pictures of people and events related to the Year of Youth adopted by CBCP.

Coyne, an Australian, has worked on assignments and appeared in magazines such as: Newsweek, Life, Time, National Geographic Magazine, New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, German Geo, French Geo, Paris Match, Madame La Figaro, London Observer Magazine, London Independent Magazine, Travel Holiday and Vogue.

His successful books include The Regeneration of the Jesuits, A World of Australians, Contemporary Photographer: Australia – MICHAEL COYNE, The Jew called Jesus, and many others.

American National Press Photographers Association and Overseas Press Club of America have cited the photographer. In April 2003 Coyne was awarded the “Centenary Medal” by the Australian Government for Services to Photography. (UCAN News)
