MANILA, Nov. 7, 2012—The re-election of the most pro-abortion president in US history, while a major disappointment to conservatives in that nation as well as to life and family advocates in the Philippines, may just be the motivation needed to galvanize the pro-life movement and work double time to get pro-life candidates into public office in the 2013 elections.
With President Barack Obama sitting at the White House for another four years, the push for the passage of the reproductive health (RH) bill in the Philippine legislature is expected to be even more aggressive, said Jose Descallar, pro-life advocacy staff of Buhay Party-List Representative Michael Velarde.
“If we will not hold our ground and make a lot of noise about our protests against anti-life measures specifically the RH bill, Malacanang will push for its passage in the next Congress,” Descaller pointed out. That is, if hardly any pro-lifers make it in seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives, he added.
“The task at hand, therefore, is to make sure that pro-lifers get elected,” Descallar stressed.
“And junk Akbayan, Gabriela, Kabataan, ACT-Teachers, Bayan Muna and other such party-list groups.”
He underscored the pressing need to educate Filipinos in responsible citizenry and the importance of participating in the electoral process.
“[There is also a] need to make pro-life issues an election/political issue, and to emphasize the Christian responsibility to evangelize politics. One way of doing this is by supporting and voting for pro-life candidates,” Descallar explained.
Barack Obama, who made it clear that he and his administration disregard religious freedom based on the “Affordable Care Act” or Obamacare mandate, secured a second term in the White House today, beating Republican contender former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Freedom-loving Filipinos as well as life and family advocates in the Philippines see the results of the US elections as significant in the pro-life crusade, particularly in the fight to eliminate the RH bill, which disregards the dignity of human life, the sanctity of human sexuality and of the institution of marriage.
Despite the continued push by proponents for the measure’s passage, a growing opposition has continued to persuade more and more Filipinos to reject the bill, through massive mobilizations, symposia and other means to bring the truth to the people. (CBCP for Life)
